TPO (Thermal Polyolefin) is the #1 rated and selling flat roof system in Parkersburg WV and Marietta OH available today and has so many advantages against the other membranes. It is a very common roof system used for restaurants industry because the grease that vents out of the kitchen does not deteriorate the membrane. It comes in 3 colors white, grey, and tan and is widely known as a cool roof because of its reflectivity. TPO is also a hot air heat welded system. What this means is, the seams are sealed by melting the product to itself so there is no adhesions to fail. Thermo-can be reheated again and again and does not cure it keeps its flexibility. Although TPO exhibits positive characteristics of thermo plastics it does not however have any plasticizers added to it this makes it chemically closer to rubber but being much stronger harder to puncture and tear than rubber.

TPO is to be known as the white weld able rubber of the future, sales have increased from 2007 to 2012 by quadrupling The gross sales of the TPO exceeds all other flat roof membranes. TPO is also considered a green roof product it is safer for the installers and is 100 % recyclable.

TPO’s application can be fully adhered or mechanically fastened or ballasted. TPO strength is to be 3 to 4 times higher than E.P.D.M. roofing systems. TPO so it does not degrade under UV radiation. This is truly my first choice for any flat roofing system.

<![CDATA[Metal Roofing Benefits for the Parkersburg WV area]]>Sun, 22 Mar 2015 15:49:34 GMThttp://hardtroofing.com/blogs/metal-roofing-benefits-for-the-parkersburg-wv-area Picture
There are many metal roofing benefits here in Parkersburg WV as well as the Marietta OH area. Metal roofing has earned it is place in the construction field for numerous reasons. To start, metal roofing has advanced greatly since the early 90s when I started installing roofs. In the 90s most of the metal roofs were so expensive only commercial buildings could afford the high cost of sheet metal roofing. The one name that comes to mind is www.berridge.com and their systems ranged around 500 to 1000 per square (1000 square feet). Now we can install sheet metal roofs for what the material cost back then. Another great advantage is the weight.

I run into so many clients that assume that sheet metal roofing will add an a lot more to the roof trusses. This is not true, it is actually a small portion of the weight of asphalt shingles.

I also hear client’s concern about the noise, and no it is not the old tin roof noisy rain. This came about primarily in the 50’s when the old style tin double-lock roofing panels were installed over beams or 1 bys with no sheathing or insulation to reduce the noise. So no, you probably won’t be singing rain on a tin roof.

Picture
TSR – is the total solar reflectance of the sheet metal roofing. If you choose a darker color you get less tsr than the lighter colors. White is around 60% tsr and black is 25% tsr. There is a great difference in the colors performance, you should keep this in mind while choosing colors. The paint is an Akzo Nobel product that uses the most advanced Siliconized Polyester Modified (SPM) roofing paint system in the industry. This paint has deep and rich colors that really stand out. We have the tools to bend custom metal to just about anything you can wrap with metal. From roof turrets, roof weather vanes, gazebos roofs, bay window roofs, siding, roof flashing, fascia, soffit and much more. Call us @ (304) 916-5936 or email me www.hardtroofing.com

<![CDATA[Repairing or Replacing Shingles in the Mid-Ohio Valley area]]>Sun, 15 Feb 2015 09:59:53 GMThttp://hardtroofing.com/blogs/repairing-shingles-in-the-mid-ohio-valley-areaPicture
Steps to replace broken or missing shingles the right way. Broken shingles are both ugly and a leak waiting to happen. As long as we can find matching shingles and the weather is not too hot because they scar and as long as it’s not too cold because they crack we can get started.

First we will determine which ones to replace and carefully remove the bad shingles with a pry bar making sure not to tear the shingle above and remove the nails.

Picture
Now it’s time to insert the new laminate after pushing the shingle in place put the nail in place tap it until it stands alone and then drive the nail on in. After we have replaced the new shingles we can go ahead and seal the shingles in place. The reason we do this is because when you remove the tabs you break the seal so now the shingle doesn’t have any adhesion it is only held by nails and this is not acceptable. We only use the best sealants such as GEO Seal and Solar Seal these products keep their elasticity. Usually you will put a few dabs where the nail go and push the shingle into it. This prevents any future blow offs in that area.

Here in the Mid-Ohio Valley we have high winds and lots of shingle in need of repair and replacing. This is not for the do it yourselfer you need to call an experienced pro. It usually is not expensive to repair a few shingles.

<![CDATA[How we remove ice and snow from your roof and gutters. in Parkersburg WV]]>Sat, 14 Feb 2015 08:44:46 GMThttp://hardtroofing.com/blogs/howwe-remove-ice-and-snow-from-your-roof-and-gutters-in-parkersburg-wv The removal of ice and snow off your roof is extremely dangerous and you should call a professional contractor.

In the Parkersburg WV area we have some pretty bad weather at times and when the snow builds up on the roofs it causes many things to go bad. The expansion of the ice will lift up shingles push gutters and flashing around. A lot of leaks we are called out to look at have had snow sitting on them for quite some time, the constant dripping finds it's way in the home eventually. It really acts like a constant rain for days, and end up soaking through the roof decking, the attic insulation, and then the drywall. One of the main problems is the weight, we all know snow is very heavy, and this is not good for the older 2 and 3 layer roofs, they have been known to collapse. Surprising enough 2 square feet of snow can weigh up to 20 pounds.

Here are some of the ways we remove the ice and snow.

One of the main things we do is make sure our ladder is dry, we do not want to slip on wet ladders. We also use an extendable pole that has a flat shovel on the end and we simply push it up the roof line. We do not get on any roofs with snow on them. Another way is using a rope thrown across the roof to another person who then drags the rope across the roof field.

They do make steamers for removal, they are popular up north of Parkersburg WV

As far as the gutter goes we are very careful with the proper harnesses and simply move our ladders down the gutter run and the areas that our hands can't get to we have extendable poles.

Be careful Mid-Ohio Valley, and stay warm.

<![CDATA[WOW! no more shingles blowing off! check out the Owens Corning Duration Surenail Shingle]]>Fri, 13 Feb 2015 14:07:54 GMThttp://hardtroofing.com/blogs/wow-no-more-shingles-blowing-offcheck-outthe-owens-corning-duration-surenail-shinglePicture

The new Owens Corning Duration Shingle have installed a nailing strip that has lots of advantages over the competition. The strip is a tough woven fabric that is installed where the nails go. What this means to the customer is no more over driven nails. Over driven nails can cause lots of problems, from leaks to shingles blowing off. The wide strip nail area covers both layers of the shingle, so when it comes to nail proofing this is the toughest shingle I have installed in the Parkersburg WV area to date.-David Reinhardt http://www.hardtroofing.com

I have found that this shingle lays flat without cupping. Right out of the package it’s flat, and it’s flat when I lay it. This keeps air voids out of underneath the shingle even before it seals.

When I install shingles here in Parkersburg WV I will always advise the client to use Owens Corning for lots of reasons. Starting with the 130 mile wind resistant warranty. There are not many days in this area that come close to 70 mile per hour winds.

Picture
I started roofing in the late 90’s and the architectural shingle warranty was 25 years and then they changed it to 30 and now it’s lifetime. I can’t say I noticed a lot of changes with the shingle other than the sure-nail strip, my personal thought is that they did not know the shingle was this good.

A lot of real estate pros have asked me about colors for their projects. The first thing I tell them is to keep it neutral. Owens Corning offers some really good choices. My favorite is the estate grey and driftwood. I hope this blog helps any thinking of purchasing a new roof.

<![CDATA[ Copper roofing benefits for the mid-Ohio Valley]]>Sat, 31 Jan 2015 13:35:32 GMThttp://hardtroofing.com/blogs/copper-roofing-benefitsPicture
There are many copper roofing benefits for the mid-Ohio valley area. Copper has earned it's place in the construction field for many reasons. We have been installing copper in the mid-Ohio valley area since we started in the 90's. Copper has been our go to product when situations occur that other metals have been known to fail. We will discuss a small portion of coppers roofing benefits.

Unlike other metals copper does not suffer from underside corrosion, that causes premature failures. Having a large temperature change in the mid- Ohio Valley area causes metals to sweat and the sweat eventually turns to rust. Rust is the largest factor in metal work failure, that I have witnessed on repair calls. If it rust eventually it's a bust!

Picture
Copper roofs are extremely durable in the mid- Ohio Valley area. They have performed well for over 700 years! Primarily due to the patina making a protective coating. Copper has low thermal movement (expansion and contraction). This helps by not stressing fasteners. On small gable roofs. expansion and contraction is relatively minor. On long panels it is necessary to let the panels float to allow movement.

In the roofing industry, copper can be used in a great many of ways. Below are some of the ways in residential where we use copper.
Flashing, Bay windows, awnings, scuppers, drip-edges, gutters and downspouts, domes, spires, vaults, wall cladding, soffit, shingles, panels, and lots more!

Please feel free to leave any suggestions, comments, or ideas on this topic of benefits of copper roofing mid-Ohio Valley. Thank you for your time. David Reinhardt.
